PROFILE

As of March 2015, Flávio Donizeti Marques is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Engineering School of São Carlos of the University of São Paulo (EESC/USP). His research interests have been concentrated on linear and nonlinear aeroelasticity, unsteady aerodynamics, aeronautical smart structures, non-conventional control systems, applications of neural networks, fuzzy logic, and genetic algorithms in aerospace problems. In particular on issues relevant to aeroelasticity and smart aeronautical structures, he has over 120 journal and conference papers, supervised 16 graduate students (6 Doctors and 10 Master’s degree), 3 post-doctoral researchers, and 24 undergraduate students. Dr. Marques has received a positive review of his works and grants from public national Brazilian agencies to support research, as the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), holding CNPq productivity grant level 2, and São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP). He is currently involved with research collaborations with groups in the Virginia Tech, USA (Prof. Muhammad R. Hajj), Univ. of Porto, Portugal (Prof. António J. M. Ferreira), and Technologic Institute of Aeronautics (Prof. Domingos A. Rade) from the Brazilian Ministry of Defense (Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica), São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil.

Dr. Marques was Associate Professor of the Dept. of Materials, Aeronautical, and Automotive Engineering and the Dept. of Aeronautical Engineering of EESC/USP (where he was vice-head of the Department) from 1999 to 2014, as well as held academic administrative positions in EESC/USP. He was the coordinator of the following extra-curricula activities at EESC/USP: AeroDesign Competition team (1998-2003), Aeronautical Engineering Week (2004-2006), and Aeronautical Challenge Competition (2003-2008). From 1988 to 1990, Dr. Marques used to work at Embraer S.A., a Brazilian aerospace conglomerate that produces commercial, military, executive and agricultural aircraft and provides aeronautical services. It is headquartered São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil. He had an engineer position working with structural stress analysis and finite element modeling there. Dr. Marques is currently member of the ABCM – Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
