SAE Brazil

Established in 1905, the SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) is an Organization linked to Engineering, accounting with more then 70.000 members, including engineers, technicians, students and business men, in more then 90 countries.

The constant development of the Aeronautical industry brings the necessity of a great number of well trained engineers, capable to tackle problems in the several design steps (teamwork, solution finding, optimization, viability and construction), as well as at the application of innovative ideas.

The SAE therefore established, in 1986, at USA, an exclusively undergraduate event: The SAE AeroDesign Competition. In 1991, the SAE Brasil was founded, connected to SAE International. Eight years later, it was decided to establish the national AeroDesign competition, classificatory for the international competition. In 1999, the I SAE Brasil AeroDesign Competition was held at São José dos Campos, SP. Until 2003, only the regular class took part at the competition. It was then established the Open Class. Since then, the champion from this class and the two first teams from Regular Class are classified to the International Competition.

The teams – which include mainly undergraduate students – must develop the project, build and test a radio-controlled cargo airplane, inside the rules and pre-established limitations, without any interference from industry professionals or any other specialists.

The competition is divided in two stages: project and flight. The first includes technical report analysis, as well as an analysis of the precision calculations in determining the maximum load carried by the airplane. The later analyzes the flying qualities of the airplane.

The projects are under several analysis criteria, including technical report preparation, plants, oral presentation and accuracy for the calculated maximum load the airplane carries. During the flights, the project qualities are strictly analyzed, and each team scores depending on the carried load and airplane lightness.

Since the competition involves high technology and big industries attention, it attracts the attention and interest from several engineering courses, a fact that is demonstrated by the participation of 65 teams in 2007, from which 4 are foreign: 1 Mexican team, 2 from Venezuela and 1 Bolivian. It is also remarkable the admirable evolution at technical quality from the projects.
