| EESC-USP is victorious again! |
| 10/28/2010 |
The EESC-USP AeroDesign Team has just come back from the XII SAE Brazil AeroDesign Competition, once again bringing excellent results.
The team took part with 4 projects: EESC-USP Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Mike, being the two first of Regular class, the third of Open Class and the last of Micro Class.
The competition began at Thursday 10/21, when the teams managed to take knowledge of the competitor airplanes. In the same day, the projects were presented to the judges through the Oral Presentations and the score of the Technical Reports was published. In the design phase, the EESC-USP teams repeated the performance seen in the last years, obtaining the resuls:
- 1st Place in Open Class: EESC-USP Charlie
- 1st Place in Micro Class: EESC-USP Mike
- 3rd Place in Regular Class: EESC-USP Alpha
- 12th Place in Regular Class: EESC-USP Bravo
In the Friday 22, the three classification batteries began. The airplanes that couldn’t conclude a valid flight carrying a minimum payload in any of these attempts wouldn’t proceed in the competition.
In the morning, the Mike team was classificated carring 2.93 lb; the Alpha airplane didn’t take off with the intended payload; the beginners airplane, Bravo, had the attempt invalidated in the landing, and the Charlie team experienced a failure of the 2.4 GHz radio system and decided not to fly.

In the afternoon, the Alpha team tried the classification in a smooth flight, with 22 lb of payload, however the wheel detached of the main landing gear during landing, and the flight was invalidated; the airplane Bravo has suffered a comand problem just after take off, and eventually falled fataly.
By the end of the first day of flights, the team came back to work at the farmstead (where the members stayed). The airplanes Alpha, Bravo and Charlie were then prepared for new attempts of classification, that would occur in the Saturday morning, while the Mike team just made some adjustments in their both airplanes.
Soon in the Saturday morning, began the 3rd battery for the Regular class and the 2nd for Open Class. The Charlie team was classificated carring nearly 46 lb of payload. The Alpha team prepared its airplane to fly with about 15 lb of payload. Since it was the last chance of the team, a tension atmosphere attained the members. However, the airplane flew and landed securely, what was reason for a great cheering.

But the Bravo team wasn't so sucessfull. After 1:30h in the security inspection, the airplane went to the runway. In the landing, the nose gear wheel droped and the team was disqualified.
The veterans teams, already classified, made their plans to the following batteries. All three planed to fly with high payload, to garantee a score which allowed bolder attempts later. However, a strong rain occured and any of the team's airplanes could leave the ground. The plans were then postponed to the third and last day of competition, Sunday.

In the sunday morning, the Alpha team started the day with a flight carrying 27.5 lb, with sucess. The Mike team faced problems with the battery and couldn't fly. But the Charlie team flew with 61.5 lb of payload, adding 77 lb of total weight (the airplane weighted 15.5 lb), maximum weight permited. In this flight, the airplane didn't brake within 200 ft of runway, losing an important bonification. Until the end of the competition, the Charlie team performed another flight with this payload, but over again it didn't suceed in braking, and for this reason it finished the competition in 2nd Place, behind the team Leviatã, from ITA.
Later, the Mike suceeded in the last flight attempt, when the airplane lifted a payload supposed to ensure the victory. The Alpha team raised the payload to 29 lb, enough to take the 1st place from the team Aerofeg. The airplane took off and flew without any problem, and after landing, that included an emotioning stop at the 200 ft limit line, the team cheered intensely.
The flight batteries finished for Open and Micro classes, but the result of Micro class was still unknown. For the Regular Class, it was opened another battery for the first ten. The Alpha team raised the payload to 29.4 lb, intending to beat a possible increase in the other teams' score. In this battery, the team Tucano, from UFU, surprised everybody and flew with its maximum weight and still obtained the bonification for braking in 200ft.
The flight of the Alpha team was extremely exciting. After taking off just in the runway limit, the airplane hardly gained some inches of altitude above the ground. With time, the airplane rose a little more, and aligned to land. In the landing, the airplane touched the beginning of the runway and jumped, touching again 100 ft forward, making impossible to stop before the 200 ft line. After the final of the battery, it was clear that the team had fallen to 2nd Place, behind Tucano.
After the competition, the teams had plenty of fun together. Below, members of EESC-USP and other teams are playing and dancing country music.

There was also performed the contest III Miss AeroDesign.
|
|
The freshmen students of different teams disputed the Race of the Taped, with their legs tied with adhesive tape.
|
|
To finish, the oficial results were announced in a ceremony, held in the ADC Embraer.

Finally, the results are:
EESC-USP Alpha
- 2nd Place of Regular Class
EESC-USP Charlie
- 2nd Place of Open Class
- Awards: Best Project, Best Oral Presentation, Highest Payload (61.5 lb) and Best Payload Prediction
EESC-USP Mike
- 1st Place of Micro Class
- Award: Best Project
With the result, the team will participate of Regular and Micro classes in the SAE AeroDesign East 2011 competition.
The team thanks specially to our pilot, Flademir Cesarin. In his 6 years like a team's member, his contribution was never so outstanding like this year. We are also pleased with the support he gave us all this time.
We also appreciate the contribution of ours sponsors and supporters, whose help we couldn't prescind in order to achieve this great result.
Finally, we thank all the teachers and staff of the Aeronautical Engineering Department, specially Gisele Lavadeci, Maria Jose, José Cláudio, Osnan Faria, Prof. Dr. Álvaro Abdalla, Prof. Dr. Paulo Greco, Prof. Dr. Fernando Catalano and Prof. Dr. James Waterhouse. The support of the School was also fundamental to this sucess.
